Catanzaro. He ran over and killed eight cyclists with his car, after serving his sentence, he causes another fatal accident and escapes: arrested in hospital in Bologna.
The protagonist of this absurd story is Chafik El Ketani, the 32-year-old of Moroccan origins who in 2010 in Lamezia Terme, along state road 18, ran over a group of amateur cyclists with his car, killing eight of them.
El Ketani was arrested today on charges of road homicide in relation to the accident he was involved in on September 6th while driving a rental car on state road 280, also in the province of Lamezia Terme. In the accident, in which no other vehicles were involved, another Moroccan citizen, Nouredine Fennane, who was traveling in the car driven by El Ketani, died.
The 32-year-old was arrested in 2010 for the massacre he caused and served an eight-year prison sentence. But when he was released he regained his driving license.
El Ketani was arrested again in execution of a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of Catanzaro at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office: this time the charge against him is road homicide, he was travelling under the influence of drugs and at a speed exceeding the speed limit, on 6 September last.
Circumstances that further aggravated his situation. The man was identified in the Sant'Orsola hospital in Bologna, where he was hospitalized for the consequences of the accident that occurred on state road 280. El Ketani had initially been hospitalized in the hospital in Catanzaro, which he had left, against the advice of the doctors, signing the discharge form and probably sensing that the situation for him, if he had remained in Calabria, could have gotten worse. But the escape to Emilia Romagna, in fact, did not help him at all.
The investigations into the new accident involving El Ketani, conducted by the Catanzaro Flying Squad with the support of the Bologna Flying Squad and the Highway Police, have shed light on his responsibilities in the accident on September 6. This morning the police arrested him in the hospital room where he was hospitalized.
