The San Gennaro Day Award, the highly anticipated event that annually rewards excellence linked to the city of Naples, will take place on Sunday 26 September 2021, at 20.30:XNUMX pm, on the Sagrato del Duomo.
The Award, produced by Jesce Sole with the artistic direction of Gianni Simioli, has been supported since the first edition by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples and, in this IX edition, also by the Campania Region, with Scabec spa and by the Chamber of Commerce through the special company SI Impresa.
The 2021 edition of the Award is a special edition: dedicated to the great tenor Enrico Caruso, on the centenary of his death and, more generally, to the miracle of the classical Neapolitan song, capable with its melody of crossing geographical and linguistic borders. With the tribute to Enrico Caruso, the San Gennaro Day Award wants to confer high recognition to those tenors who interpreted the art of singing in its highest and noblest form. And if Caruso entered the myth with his poignant and sensual voice, an exceptional interpreter of the Neapolitan song in the world today is Andrea Bocelli, who will be awarded a special San Gennaro Day award in the name of Caruso. Bocelli, a tenor beloved throughout the world, with his voice of extraordinary beauty has given new life to the classical Neapolitan song, making it shine in the most prestigious national and international theaters and has also succeeded, with his communicative power, in captivating the new generations with the repertoire of the tradition of the classical Neapolitan song.
The stage of the San Gennaro Day Award will host a roster of excellences, who with their work, each in their own sector, have brought prestige to the city of Naples, performing a true earthly miracle. For the IX Edition, the prestigious Made in Naples award will be given to: Peppino di Capri, Lino Banfi, Antonio Milo, Rocco Hunt, Emilia Zamuner, Tommaso Zorzi, Vincenzo De Lucia, Barbara Foria, Marco Calone, Iabo, Bruno Giordano, Sondra Sottile, Francesca Simonelli, Nu Genea.
On stage not only the world of music and entertainment. The San Gennaro Day Award will also be given to Eduardo Di Napoli, a courageous entrepreneur from the Sanità neighborhood; Ezio Stellato, an expert in fiscal and tax matters; Vincenzo Capasso, a young pizza chef who from the street became a Master of the art of baking; Davide Rosiello, a doctor; Carlo De Simone, CEO European Brokers; Cristina Leardi, President of the Consortium for the protection of the Vesuvius DOP cherry tomato volcanic eruptions and CEO of the Masseria del Sorbo farm
Alfonso Esposito Marroccella, a merchant from Arzano, linked to the Padolino family for 60 years in a relationship of esteem and affection, will be awarded the special Padolino Prize, named after the merchant Rosario Padolino, who tragically passed away on that very street he loved and for which he worked so hard in the name of urban redevelopment, which supported the return of the feast of San Gennaro nine years ago.
The Award combines moments of entertainment with moments of reflection. Like every year, the Grand Gala of the awards ceremony will be opened by a Lectio Magistralis to the Neapolitan people. This year's Lectio is entrusted to Italia Orofino and Carmen Nappo, representing the workers of Whirpool Napoli. The workers will retrace the stages of the painful dispute and explain what the epilogue of Whirpool means for the entire city of Naples and for its productive/manufacturing fabric, now reduced to the bone.
The Award increasingly confirms its national and even international vocation. During the evening there will be a video link with the feast of San Gennaro in New York, and, in particular, with Little Italy in Manhattan and with James Bari, a prominent figure in the Italian-American community and owner of the historic Benito One restaurant, located in the heart of Mulberry Street, where the feast of San Gennaro takes place. With him will be chef Pasquale Cozzolino, who from the Spanish Quarters of Naples conquered the Big Apple, where he became one of the major interpreters of the culinary scene, as well as the chef of the Mayor of New York.
The long-awaited awards ceremony was preceded by cultural events that celebrated the Patron Saint and paid homage to the tenor Caruso, throughout the month of September through the visual arts, literature and music: the exhibition “Sotto il segno di San Gennaro/Strategie dello sguardo” curated by Loredana Troise at the Monumental Complex of San Domenico Maggiore (free admission, until October 1, from Monday to Saturday, from 11 am to 18 pm), the round table “San Gennaro, the history, the objects of faith and the 'religion of things' of the Neapolitan people” curated by Gea Palumbo and the concert/seminar “Enrico Caruso un napoletano a New York” curated by maestro Luigi Ottaiano in collaboration with the stable orchestra of classical Neapolitan song of the “Nicola Sala” Conservatory of Benevento.
