The trial for the case of Raphael Arcella, the 29-year-old boy from Caivano who died after gastric bypass surgery performed at the Trusso clinic in Ottaviano. During the surgery, the artery behind the young man's stomach was damaged and he was transported in critical condition to the Policlinico in Naples, where, however, it was not possible to save his life.
The two doctors under investigation, Cristiano and Casillo, are accused of “incompetence, negligence, imprudence during the gastric bypass surgery, ignoring the SI.C.OB. guidelines” (Italian Society of Obesity and Metabolic Disease Surgery).
"We want the trial to be held quickly. For our family this story has become an ordeal, it is difficult to go on every day weighing on the fact that Raffaele is no longer here, it is a martyrdom. We ask for an exemplary sentence and for the two doctors to be struck off."- says a moved Antonio Arcella, Raffaele's father.
“Beyond the technicalities related to the first part of the trial” – explains the lawyer Nicola Fernando Maria Pellino, legal representative of the Arcella family – “what I want to clarify is that this trial must shine a spotlight on the issue of resorting to bariatric surgery, too often practiced with such superficiality.
In the case of poor Raffaele, it was an absolutely avoidable operation, among other things without subjecting the patient to a psychological preparation process, and replaceable with a therapeutic weight loss program. Raffaele's parents are closed in their grief but at the same time they are combative because they demand justice and I will fight alongside them to make this happen."
“We will always stand by the victims of poor healthcare. It is unacceptable that a young man lost his life for such an operation. We ask that justice be done and that this trial not become an odyssey inflicting further torture on the Arcella family.” – commented the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli who has been following the affair since the beginning.
