Instagram would not be good for teenagers. This is what an internal research says Facebook, the company that owns the platform, leaked to the Wall Street Journal. In particular, according to internal research, one in three young users develops disorders of perception of their body, while others believe that the platform causes them anguish and an increase in depressive tendencies.
The Wall Street Journal obtained the results of Facebook’s research from 2019 onward. “Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse,” the researchers reported. According to the Journal, executives reviewed the research, which was also cited in a presentation to CEO Mark Zuckerberg last year.
However, Facebook has reportedly struggled to address the issue. In recent months, it has also emerged that the company is looking to create an under-13 version of Instagram. In an official post, Instagram's head of public policy, Karina Newton, explained that the company is looking at ways to steer users away from certain types of posts and content.
“We’re cautiously optimistic,” he writes, “that these suggestions will help direct people to more uplifting content and shift the focus away from how people look.”
