2021 Local Elections. Confcommercio Campania presents the companies' proposals for the city's relaunch to Salerno's mayoral candidates

An open dialogue at a round table with trade associations, for the relaunch of the city. The meeting organized yesterday by Confcommercio Campania, at the Salerno headquarters, to represent the priorities and proposals of businesses to the mayoral candidates, Vincenzo Napoli, Antonio Cammarota, Michele Sarno and Elisabetta Barone, in the next 2021 administrative elections, ended.

Building the new Salerno of the future is a commitment that must pass through continuous and constant monitoring of needs, which leads to medium-long term planning and a plan of targeted interventions, these are the expectations put on the table. From 2012 to today, 384 retail businesses have disappeared, a sign of a crisis that began well before the claws of the pandemic attacked the economic fabric of city commerce.

It is therefore necessary to invest in the following priorities: reducing the accessibility infrastructure gaps, from transport to broadband; digitalization and innovation to improve the relationship between businesses and Public Administration; control of the territory and fight against commercial abuse and widespread illegality; creation of a plan for the development of the skills of the entrepreneurial and commercial fabric of tertiary workers through training interventions and continuous transformation of skills. “Leading development, aiming at the centrality of trade and tourism in the economic and employment recovery of the city after the health emergency. We ask that solid contacts be maintained with the categories to encourage a quality offer for citizens and tourists” – says Pasquale Russo, Director of Confcommercio Campania, adding: “In coherence and in line with the PNRR which has recognised these priorities: if you look closely, it is an investment that could very likely determine a significant reversal of the trend”.

Even the development of tourism-related activities, which in the 2012-2020 period were among the few growing despite the negative economic situation of the system, will not be able to consolidate in the absence of adequate infrastructure, services, a safe scenario and, above all, a plan that goes in the direction of an effective and modern tourism sector.

“Again, a plan that, without mincing words, is coherent and focused on the tourist vocation of the city that has been talked about (too) for too long” – continues Giuseppe Gagliano, President of Confcommercio Campania in the province of Salerno – "Today the market tertiary sector in Salerno (Commerce, Tourism, Services, Logistics and Transport, Health), is worth 65% of the GDP and 80% of employment. The tertiary sector represents a cornerstone of the city's economy and must, therefore, find adequate space in the city's politics, more than has happened up to now. We want to reiterate that commerce is one of the main drivers of growth and development of the Salerno of tomorrow. A city that we imagine welcoming and lively, just as one would expect from a place with a clear tourist vocation".

Below is a summary of the observations expressed by the provincial managers of the various sectors represented by Confcommercio Campania: planning of commercial activities in the UNESCO area, Commercial Districts in all territorial areas where there is availability, security and combating crime (reorganization of the Municipal Police, extension of the video surveillance system, establishment of fixed garrisons, in strategic points of the city); urban plan for mobility and public transport; sea and water resources (safeguarding recreational activities, interventions to replenish free beach areas, control of pollution levels and waste water discharges, improvement and implementation of parking); infrastructure and construction sites (timing); maintenance of urban decor and furnishings; Confcommercio/Anci memorandum of understanding for urban regeneration; efficiency of the administrative machine (strengthen the SUAP, activate a direct channel between the offices and business organizations); Participatory governance with application of the Business Statute; review and adjustment of waste tax (TARI); extension of public land occupation, respecting safety and environmental decorum requirements; nightlife coordination (e.g. Patto per la Notte); tourism development plan programming (councillor responsible for the branch, permanent discussion table, agenda of municipal events of public utility, infopoint and signage, electric mobility); tourist tax investment funds; creation of museum centers and enhancement of cultural sites (calendar of events, promotion of local specialties).

Further long-term benefits can only come from collaborations between institutions, local entrepreneurs, companies and competent institutes.
