St. George. Exactly one year ago, over 65% of San Giorgio residents reconfirmed Mayor Giorgio Zinno as the city's leader. A result that came at a difficult time, when the Covid emergency forced everyone to radically change their perspective and introduce new goals for San Giorgio a Cremano and its community.
The First Citizen has worked in full synergy with the municipal administration and with great commitment, looking at the needs of a city shaken by the health emergency and the economic crisis, but also aiming at the future, in a perspective of growth and with a new vision of the city.
In the first year of administration, given the great economic difficulties created by the pandemic, it was decided to give priority to SOCIAL POLICIES towards the weakest groups, implementing:
food support activities for the needs of families in difficulty; purchase of tablets and technological equipment for students who were unable to follow lessons in DAD; Bonuses for newborns were assigned for the first time in order to help those who became parents in the difficult moment of the pandemic; free pulse oximeters were donated to citizens in difficulty; 4 apartments confiscated from criminals were delivered to families waiting for a home; the first Anti-Violence Center and Shelter for Abused Women was inaugurated, also in confiscated assets; free accommodation for the elderly and summer camps for children were reinstated, Tari concessions for domestic and non-domestic users were confirmed and increased;
On the SCHOOL front:
comprehensive institutes were provided with a small economic fund to promptly meet the needs of the schools; external and internal restyling interventions were carried out in all the buildings that needed it, giving priority to safety needs, to guarantee the right distancing and to offer increasingly welcoming environments; in some institutes, in fact, we created new classrooms and movable walls to expand the teaching spaces; new toilets and waterproofing of the roofs.
All this by listening and agreeing on activities based on the needs expressed by school principals with whom the administration constantly consults. In addition, school meals will be restarted, guaranteeing exemptions for the weaker groups and book vouchers for families in difficulty have been confirmed. In addition, the activities of the nursery school, the pride of the city, have been restarted.
PUBLIC WORKS: the projects included in the electoral program are many and ambitious. Today, in one year of administration, most of them have already been started, intercepting funds and investing in many restyling activities: from Piazza Troisi, which will be inaugurated soon despite some delays due to the opinions of the Superintendence, to the extraordinary maintenance of many streets, with new carriageways and sidewalks; from the completion of the wonderful park of Villa Bruno, inaugurated this year during the Troisi Award, to the energy efficiency that has improved lighting in many areas of the city, also solving ancestral problems due to obsolete systems. And again, from the demolition of the Cappiello school, which will be rebuilt from scratch, to the construction of the new Police Station, whose agreement with the Ministry of the Interior was defined and concluded at the beginning of this new mandate.
Staying on the SAFETY front:
the number of video surveillance cameras has been increased thanks to the “Safe Schools” project funded by the Prefecture, which has allowed 18 more cameras to be positioned in front of schools; at the same time, maintenance has been carried out on all the other cameras in the area, making them functional again and thus covering almost the entire city.
From an URBAN PLANNING point of view: the preliminary PUC has been approved and the definitive plan will be approved by December 31st, thus redrawing the territory, through the reorganization of areas and services.
Furthermore, the administration is maintaining its commitment on the EMPLOYMENT front:
competitions have been launched for municipal police officers, administrative instructors, environmental surveillance instructors and IT experts. In this way, the city will have an even larger police force and a more efficient administrative machine, thanks to new additions that will be distributed across the various offices.
On EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND INTEGRATION POLICIES: a guarantor for the disabled and a guarantor for the elderly were appointed, the new regulation of the Equal Opportunities Table was approved and the board of directors of the new Youth Forum was elected. The project for an LGBT help desk was presented.
Finally, on the CULTURE level, after the lockdown, in-person activities have resumed, increasing the background that gave San Giorgio a Cremano the definition of City of Culture; first with the Troisi Award and then with the literary reviews in the presence of national and local authors who met with the public in the wonderful city villas; with the Open-air Cinema and with many free shows to offer a pleasant summer for everyone.
All of this, of course, net of the activities that are underway for the management of the emergency and vaccinations. The vaccination center in Via Mazzini has in fact become a reality in a very short time, thanks to the tireless work of municipal and non-municipal employees, with the indispensable role of civil protection; just as a task force composed of UOPC doctors is still present inside the town hall for the management of the emergency.
“In short – explains Zinno – we are implementing, step by step, in compliance with the deadlines, the electoral program with which we presented ourselves to the citizens.
For all this, however, it is right to thank, not only the majority who tirelessly among councilors and assessors work every day to achieve the objectives, but also the municipal employees who allow us to transform the programmatic directions into concrete actions. We still have a lot to do. We will do it with enthusiasm, commitment and always listening to our community. Let's continue to build. Together."
