The EU gives the green light to Croatia's Prosek. MEP Mara Bizzo, member of the Agriculture Committee, protests
“From Europe comes yet another scandalous attack on Made in Italy and our Prosecco: in response to my urgent question in which I asked to block the illegitimate and fraudulent request made by Croatia for the recognition of the Prosek wine denomination, the EU Commission announced that it had positively assessed the Croatian request which would be compliant “with the requirements of admissibility and validity”, so much so that it announced that “it will now proceed with its publication in the Official Journal of the EU”.
Faced with this crazy decision by the EU, we are ready to put up barricades to defend in every way and in every place the Prosecco Made in Italy because it must be clear to everyone that the only true Prosecco is the one produced in our lands, so much so that it is recognized-protected by DOC and DOCG denominations, not Prosek". This is what the MEP declares Mara Bizzotto, member of the Agriculture Committee, following the response of the EU Commissioner, Wojciechowski. “It's clear to everyone – underlines Bizzotto from the pages of – explains Il Giornale Di Vicenza – that Croatian Prosek is clearly in conflict with the Italian PDO Prosecco and with all the EU regulations that strictly protect productions with a protected designation of origin, and for this reason the decision of the European Commission to support Croatia in its extremely dangerous attempt to damage over 8 thousand Italian producers and to defraud consumers by playing on the Prosecco/Prosek assonance is even more shameful".
