Melfi. Eleven people were arrested for having played a role in the serious riot that took place on March 9th of last year at the Melfi prison, in the context of protests against the restrictive measures imposed by the Dap to contain the Covid-19 epidemiological emergency.
The arrests, ordered by the Review Court at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Potenza after the GIP had denied the precautionary measure, were carried out in the provinces of Potenza, Benevento, Catania, Palermo, Syracuse, L'Aquila, Syracuse, Bari, Reggio Calabria and Asti.
The investigations, coordinated by the DDA and carried out by the Central Operations Service of the State Police and the Organized Crime Section of the Flying Squad of the Lucanian capital, have allowed us to trace the identity of all forty-four inmates involved in the riot, during which health personnel and various Penitentiary Police officers, on duty at the Melfi institute, were held captive for approximately nine hours.
Thanks to the immediate intervention of the police forces converged on the spot, as well as to the efforts of the Penitentiary Police of Melfi, it was, in due time, possible to achieve the liberation of the hostages by taking the rioters back to their detention rooms, following a long negotiation during which the supporters of the riot had also drawn up a document of requests and claims.
The precautionary order adopted by the Court of Appeal of Potenza was adopted against all forty-four defendants, and for the thirty-three remaining positions we are still awaiting the developments of the appeals for cassation proposed by the respective defense attorneys.
