From September 20th to October 4th, the newly formed charity organization Un Libro per il Pascale, formed by a team of young people living in the V Municipality of Vomero-Arenella, has planned, together with the bookshops of the hill area, a fundraiser of new and used books for the patients of the Pascale National Cancer Institute, while new bookshops are being built inside the institute itself.

“Reading means being free”, says the charity on the Facebook page dedicated to the event, where you can clearly understand the purpose of the initiative, that is, the involvement of citizens and bookstores on the importance of reading linked to the theme of donation.

At the disposal of the patients of the Pascale there will be manuals, recipe books, novels and other volumes of every literary genre; in the libraries the patients will be able to both borrow books and leave others. There will be at least one in each department and since the available spaces are not many, the books will also be suspended on mobile panels equipped with QR codes that will give the possibility to download the associated book to the phone of the person who frames it.

The project is called Il Libro Sospeso, it starts from an idea of the scientific management and is part of the activities aimed at improving the organization of the Institute of Tumors of Naples. "This initiative - as stated by the scientific director of Pascale Nicola Normanno - was taken for our patients in order to increase the humanization of care, improve their conditions during hospitalization and involve a chain of volunteers around the Institute, between those who donate them and, as soon as Covid allows us, those who distribute them. In addition to the books, you can also download information about our institute".

The general manager of Pascale, Attilio Bianchi, also expressed his positive opinion, declaring: “Both physical and mental illness leads to isolation, the book helps to maintain contact with the world, distancing oneself from the fixed thought of pain or worry about one's situation. The Suspended Book goes, therefore, in this direction, helping the patient not only with diagnosis and treatment but also with the spirit. In short, that is our mission: the patient at the center".

To participate, each citizen can donate their own book (new or used in good condition and relevant to the intended use) which will then be delivered to the Pascale, or they can purchase a book that they decide to personally donate to the institute, receiving in exchange from the purchasing bookshop a voucher for a 10% discount on their next purchase.

The partner libraries of the initiative are:

– IoCiSto Bookshop, Via Cimarosa 20, Vomero;
– Raffaello Bookshop, Via Antonino D'Antona 4a, Rione Alto;
– Raffaello Bookshop, Via San Giacomo dei Capri 58c, Arenella;
– Raffaello Books & Coffee Bookshop, Via Michele Kerbaker 35, Vomero.

Finally, fully embracing the charity initiative, each of the participating businesses will privately donate books to Pascale. And patients will also have the option of taking the book home.
