Verona. Yet another femicide last night in the province of Verona where Chiara Ugolini, 27, volleyball player and coach, was killed.

The person who killed the girl was Emanuele Impellizzeri, 38 years old, originally from Catania, who was stopped on the night between September 5 and 6, on the highway near Florence Impruneta while he was trying to escape to the South on his motorbike. Impellizzeri had been released from prison last June and was living in Calmasino di Bardolino in the province of Verona, in the same building where Chiara Ugolini shared an apartment with her partner.

The man, who had attempted to escape on his high-powered motorbike, is accused of aggravated voluntary homicide. Already convicted of robbery, property crimes and resisting a public official, he was on probation with social services in the ground floor apartment of the three-story building where the victim also lived. At the time of the crime, Chiara was alone at home: she had returned home from work at 14 p.m. and it was precisely her failure to return to work in the afternoon that had triggered the concerns of her boyfriend, who discovered the body last night. It seems that a few days earlier, Chiara had intervened in a very violent fight that had broken out between Impellizzeri and his partner, during which the man allegedly swore he would make her pay. After the arrest, however, this detail was not openly confirmed by the killer.

The man simply told investigators that the crime had taken place on Sunday because "he knew he would find Chiara at home". The investigators, the Carabinieri, have not found any obvious traces of a break-in, and are trying to understand why the girl opened the door to her murderer despite knowing his irascible and violent character. The man, who depicted himself with the effigy of the Duce on his Facebook profile, has made partial admissions about what happened, confirmed by his blood-stained clothes and the scratches to his face that the victim inflicted on him in a desperate attempt to defend herself. But he has remained impenetrable silent about the reasons for the act. The prosecutor Eugenia Bertini has ordered an autopsy on the young woman's body, which has a slight bruise on her head.

It will also help us understand how she died, since no weapon was found in the house and the murderer spoke generically of a push to the ground. Impellizzeri acted, according to investigators, with cold lucidity: he withdrew 200 euros and ran away into the night along the highway. Chiara, described by everyone as a sunny girl, a lover of travel, after graduating in Padua had chosen to work in one of her partner's father's clothing stores and was the coach of the children's volleyball team in Palazzolo.
