Whirpool, appeal from the bishop of Naples: "Suspend the layoffs. I ask this in the name of Merciful God"
"Suspend the layoffs. I ask this, in the name of Merciful God, to the Government and the Management of Whirpool, on the eve of the meeting called by the Ministry of Labor for September 16. About four hundred families are experiencing a serious tragedy, in the uncertainty of the present and future of the Naples plant and, therefore, of the job and the resulting income. I am personally following this sad and worrying story and I have had the opportunity to become aware of the feverish anxiety that the workers and their families are suffering, over whom the sword of the suspension of work activity, the closure of the Naples plant and the layoffs looms menacingly”. This is the appeal launched by the Archbishop of Naples, Don Mimmo Battaglia.
"It is unthinkable or justifiable that an industrial reality appreciated for the quality of its products and not at all passive should be wiped out, as if with a sponge. Naples, the metropolitan area, Campania and the South, which are already in a state of perpetual job insecurity, cannot sufferand – adds the prelate – the accentuation and worsening of unemployment levels, with the rising poverty rate and the emigration of intelligence, professionalism and youth resources. There is still time to save everything and everyone, but it is necessary for the parties to recover a moment of necessary serenity and analysis”.
“I therefore appeal, with the heart of a Pastor and a father, to President Draghi, to the Minister of Labor, to the Minister for the South, to the entrepreneurial and trade union forces, to Whirlpool - he concludes - so that they can find a just understanding and an appropriate solution in a united manner. I have great confidence in the wisdom of all parties."
