Naples. Contracts and bribes: former parliamentarian Alfonso Papa has been convicted of extortion for favoring businessmen close to the Belforte clan.

The Fourth Criminal Section of the Court of Naples (President Anna Laura Alfano) sentenced Alfonso Papa, a former PDL parliamentarian, to four years and six months in prison, and his father, Giovanni Papa, to two years and eight months. This was the conclusion of a trial stemming from an investigation by the Naples Prosecutor's Office (prosecutors Woodcock, Carrano, and Loreto) into alleged favors in exchange for money and other benefits to entrepreneurs Angelo and Roberto Grillo, believed to be close to the Belforte Camorra clan. The conviction also concerns another incident (not aggravated) involving another entrepreneur.

Alfonso Papa and his father were found guilty of extortion, aggravated by aiding and abetting a mafia organization, specifically the Belforte clan. The Grillos, entrepreneurs in the cleaning services sector, have been implicated in several investigations. Alfonso Papa and his father, Giovanni, were arrested for this matter in July 2014 by the Guardia di Finanza, following investigations coordinated by the Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) and the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office's Crimes Against Public Administration unit. The judge ordered Alfonso Papa to be jailed, while Giovanni was placed under house arrest. The former parliamentarian, who was also banned from holding public office for five years, was acquitted "because the fact did not exist" of several incidents involving two businessmen. The same formula, "the fact did not exist," was used for the defendant Valentina Pacchiano, who was acquitted of making false statements.
