The CNDDU, National Coordination of Teachers of the Human Rights subject, intends to remember the figure of Francesco Fortugno, assassinated by the 'Ndrangheta on 16 October 2005 while he was going to the polling station for the Ulivo primaries in the entrance hall of Palazzo Nieddu del Rio in Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Locri.
Fortugno was a doctor who held the position of hospital chief in Reggio Calabria and since 1986 he had also been involved in politics, having assumed the role of vice president of the Calabria Region on 15 May 2005. Operating in a social context such as that relating to Calabrian healthcare was certainly not and still is not easy. The healthcare sector with its large contracts attracted the interests of organised crime and the risk of mafia infiltration in the ASL was certainly a reality that had to be faced on a daily basis.
The Calabrian politician's actions were always correct and in his conduct he tried to contrast corruption and the patronage system. Probably for this modus operandi Fortugno was not well regarded by the criminal associations that decided to eliminate him physically. The judiciary over the years managed to identify and condemn the instigator, Giuseppe Marcianò, and the killers Salvatore Ritorto and Domenico Audino.
The tragic event demonstrates how difficult it was and still is to carry out functions of responsibility in strategic sectors in regions at high risk of mafia, where the cancer of illegality finds fertile ground especially in a poor and underdeveloped environment.
Mafia, Camorra and Ndrangheta with their rules try to replace the State, imposing themselves in all economically crucial sectors and conditioning the development of the entire society. Examples like Fortugno should be remembered in schools to make young people understand the strength of moral commitment and the civic values that everyone should safeguard.
On October 16, 2021, the CNDDU will post Francesco Fortugno's face on the cover image of its Facebook page and website with the hashtag #parolelibereperlalegità.
