The Marine Protected Area intends to join the civil action at next Monday's hearing. The defendants have devastated the Capri sea stacks. The organization, which also manages the "Punta Campanella and Capri Seabed" site of community interest, has been damaged.

The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area will file a request to become a civil party in the trial against the stone masons who devastated the Capri stacks. The Authority will file its civil action at the hearing of the trial to be held before the GUP of Naples on Monday, October 11.
The President of the AMP, Lucio Cacace, has assigned the task to the lawyer Valentina Romoli, a criminal lawyer from the Rome Bar Association.

The Marine Park will ask to be a civil party as the entity entrusted with the management of the Natura 2000 site called “Seabeds of Punta Campanella and Capri”. The site includes SIC (Site of Community Interest) ZPS (Special Protection Area) and ZSC (Special Conservation Area). An area of great naturalistic value, between the Sorrento peninsula and the island of Capri, devastated by an unscrupulous criminal organization.

For years, the date fishermen had been taking the prohibited mollusc from the submerged walls of the Capri stacks, creating enormous environmental damage. A vast operation conducted by the Guardia di Finanza and the Naples Prosecutor's Office had led, in recent months, to the issuing of a series of precautionary measures against two different but connected criminal groups, one operating in the Capri area and the other near the port of Naples.

After more than 3 years of investigations, last March, a total of 19 personal precautionary measures were ordered, of which 6 were for prison custody and 6 for house arrest. Over 100 people were investigated, involved in various capacities in the black market of sea dates. A business of millions of euros that has caused irreparable damage to large tracts of seabed.

“The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, since its establishment, has always fought against this criminal scourge that has caused enormous damage to the seabed of the Sorrento peninsula and Capri - declares the President of the Marine Park, Lucio Cacace - Over the years, various awareness and communication campaigns have been carried out against the consumption of sea dates, days and nights of monitoring to support the Police in identifying date traders.

The environmental damage, but also to the image of the Authority, has been considerable. Now we hope that, once and for all, these criminal organizations will be definitively eradicated and that no one will ever take a date from our seabed again. We will ask - concludes Cacace - to join the civil action in the other proceedings against the date harvesters, brought forward by the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office and the Coast Guard that will open in the coming months."

In the meantime, the Marine Protected Area, with the lawyer Valentina Romoli, will aim for an exemplary punishment for the defendants in this first trial. And will ask for damages, in particular, from 7 people involved in the illegal activities in Capri and for 4 different charges: pollution and environmental disaster, damage and receiving stolen goods.

The Park will ask for compensation for damage to its image, as the body entrusted with the SIC (Site of Community Interest) “Seabeds of Punta Campanella and Capri”. Over the years, in fact, the Marine Protected Area has carried out several important projects for the protection of the area.

Investing resources in conservation, eco-sustainable development, information and communication actions to relaunch and enhance the territory and the sea of that part of the Gulf of Naples. An intense promotional activity that, over the years, has contributed to building and disseminating, at local and national level, the image of a place of great attraction for the biodiversity of which it is rich, where you can spot dolphins and in whose waters you can free the many turtles recovered and released back into the wild.

As well as an area in which to design and implement eco-friendly activities and sustainable tourist services. An Image partly disfigured and continually damaged due to the presence of date traders who, with their illegal activities in a protected area, have for years damaged the reputation of one of the most beautiful and important marine protected areas in Italy.
