“Several hundred agricultural companies in the buffalo sector took to the streets in Grazzanise today to demand immediate and concrete answers that can resolve the serious problem of brucellosis, while at the same time protecting a sector of fundamental importance for the economy of the Campania Region”.
This was announced by Copagri Caserta, which organized the protest, which was attended by numerous mayors and administrators of neighboring municipalities, as well as contractors and representatives of the supply chain. The national vice president Pietro Pellegrini and the president of the Caserta federation Salvatore Ciardiello spoke for Copagri.
"We believe the time has come for a change of pace in the activities to combat brucellosis, which has long threatened the production of mozzarella and all related industries; vaccinations, in particular, seem to be the only tool to limit the spread of the disease, unlike the slaughter of buffalo suspected of having contracted it, which is seriously risking bringing the sector to its knees", Pellegrini underlined.
“This is precisely the message we launched at the Technical Table convened by the Ministry of Health in July 2021 and it is always this concept that we will reiterate to the representatives of Mipaaf, who we should meet in the next few days”, announced the vice president of Copagri.
“Previous regional plans to combat and eradicate brucellosis have failed miserably, leading to only one sad result: the slaughter of over 40 thousand animals with suspected infection, which then turned out to be healthy in about 90% of cases, causing obvious damage to breeders and the entire buffalo supply chain, which paid the price with a loss of about 30% – explained Ciardiello – For these reasons, we reiterate that in our opinion, to defeat brucellosis it is appropriate to use vaccination prophylaxis as a priority; otherwise, there is a risk of causing irreversible damage to the production cycle of this animal and, consequently, to the entire sector, the flagship of the Campania agri-food sector”, concluded the president of Copagri Caserta.
