Campania has always been a land of classical music, neomelodic and Neapolitan song and all together they have contributed to making both the land and many other aspects of it known in the world: among the most important singers born in the Campania region and who have contributed to the success of the music born in these lands in the world we certainly remember Pino Daniele, Renato Carosone, Massimo Ranieri and Mario Merola just to name a few but the list could be even longer.

However, not everyone knows that, in addition to the different types of musical styles, Campania also has some musical instruments, on Reinzoo.it you can sometimes find some models that were created in Campania and that are part of the history of this wonderful land.

The typical instrument par excellence of these areas is certainly the mandolin which has almost always accompanied the performances of the most important Neapolitan songs in the world and is certainly the most iconic and characteristic instrument with which the typical music of these lands is associated.

Il mandolin It is similar to the guitar and has rather distant origins as it was first made in the 17th century by a Neapolitan family that produced lutes called Casa Vinaccia (the family name was Vinaccia). The mandolin as a musical instrument is categorized within string instruments (like the guitar, violin or harp for example) and is characterized by having four double strings.

The success of the mandolin began in the eighteenth century when it was considered the instrument of the Neapolitan nobility, a categorization that it later lost when it became the most characteristic musical instrument of Neapolitan popular song.

Another typical instrument of Campania, even if less famous than the mandolin, is certainly the putipù which is basically a drum made with hard goat skin (in Campania, in other areas of Italy, kid skin is used instead, which is softer). The putipù is composed, in addition to the goat skin that acts as a membrane, also of a cane and a resonance chamber that can be of different materials depending on where it is made. The putipù is also called Caccavella.

The putipù is often accompanied by the scetavajasse, a musical instrument made up of two wooden sticks, the notched one being longer and having tin plates on its sides: the sound produced is a rhythmic sound.

In Neapolitan music, the calascione is also widely used, which also belongs to the string instruments, and is characterised by having a very long neck (which can reach up to 2 metres) and a sound box that can be compared to that of the mandolin (although smaller in size).

Castagnelle, usually known as nacchere which are of Spanish origin, are another typical instrument of the Neapolitan tradition and are categorized within percussion instruments: they are made up of two pieces of wood that can look like shells or chestnuts and to emit the sound they are hit against each other through an opening and closing movement of the hands.

In addition to those listed above, which are among the most widespread and well-known instruments of the Campania area, there are also other typical instruments such as the tammorra (a percussion instrument), the ciaramella (which belongs to the oboe family) or the sisco (which is instead a small flute).
