Swiss Guards No Vax in Vatican: 3 Resign

The chaos continues in the Vatican over the No Vax Swiss Guards. After the three soldiers who left their duties to avoid being vaccinated, three other guards of the Pope's army are temporarily suspended from service, until they decide what to do.

The Holy See introduced the obligation of the Green Pass starting from 1 October, with an ordinance wanted by the Pope and signed by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, president of the pontifical commission of the State of the City.

"With the ordinance, the Pontifical Swiss Guard Corps deemed it appropriate to introduce some measures in line with those adopted by other military corps in the world”Lieutenant Urs Breitenmoser explains to LaPresse.

“In particular, all the guards were asked to carry out the vaccine against Covid-19, to protect their own health and that of others with whom they come into contact for reasons of service. Three members of the Guard have chosen not to comply with this request, voluntarily leaving the Corps. For another three, temporary suspension from service was ordered pending that they can regularize their position according to the new provisions ".

It was Pope Francis who underlined the need for since the beginning of the pandemic “ensure the health and well-being of the working community while respecting the dignity, rights and fundamental freedoms of each of its members”.

In the City State, vaccination against Covid is voluntary, but already in February the Bertello commission had issued a decree which provided, for those who refused the vaccine, "Consequences of varying degrees that can lead to the termination of the employment relationship".

In the Vatican they are “everyone vaccinated”, Bergoglio claimed during the conference on the flight from Bratislava to Rome, on September 15, "Except a small group that must understand how to help". And he recalled the case of the no-vax cardinal Reynold Burke: “Even in the College of Cardinals there are deniers and one of them is hospitalized with the virus. Irony of life”.

by Federica Annunziata April 23, 2025 - 16:44 16:44

A simple, authentic, popular idea: a Youth soccer tournament in Naples, in memory of Pope Francis. To think about it is Joseph Bruscolotti, historic captain of Napoli's first championship, who on the day of mourning for the passing of the Argentine Pope reflects on the value of sport as an educational tool.

“The important thing is to educate”, says Bruscolotti. “Pope Francis always said: sport can help those who have little, it can help you grow, teach respect, give you a direction.” Not a slogan, but a concrete vision. And who better than the kids from the suburbs can embody that message? Hence the idea of an initiative that goes beyond memory: a real tournament, in neighborhoods where opportunities are lacking but not talent, to carry forward, with the ball between our feet, a legacy of values.
