Napoli. There is no peace for the decorum and dignity of Piazza Mercato in Naples, increasingly at the mercy of incivility and vandalism.
This time, as residents and activists report to the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli, the ones who pay the price are the Sphinx fountains, reduced to garbage dumps and covered in vandalistic graffiti.
“The state of degradation of the Seguro fountains, better known as the Sphinx fountains, in Piazza Mercato is an unbearable offense to the image of one of the most characteristic places in the city. Recently restored, they are now once again in pitiful conditions. Submerged by waste and by writings with markers and spray paint made by uncivilized people who do not even understand the gravity of this vandalism in one of the sites that has made the history of Naples.
Many messages say: 'I love you' or have hearts drawn on them, but in reality those who do similar things do not feel love, whether or not for themselves, while there is a complete lack of love for their city, its moments and its history.
We must immediately restore these works of art their dignity and protect them from ignorance and disaffection for our city. The uncivilized and vandalistic drift that we are experiencing as a city is among the darkest in recent decades. The sum of the malfunctioning of essential services and the disaffection for common goods has created a devastating mixture. With the start of the new administration, we must undoubtedly begin a new Era and preserve our monuments by stopping uncivilized people and vandals. ” – commented Councilor Borrelli.
