Naples, the raincoat copy of Commissioner Ricciardi stolen from Gambrinus

NapoliThe wooden coat rack inside the Caffe' Gambrinus in Naples is now bare: the trench coat of Commissioner Ricciardi, the character created by the writer Maurizio de Giovanni, has been stolen.

It was a copy, donated by the historic Canzanella tailoring shop to make the corner dedicated to Luigi Alfredo Ricciardi inside the room even more spectacular, right where the commissioner "allows" himself a break between coffee and sfogliatella or welcomes his guests, as indicated in the novels set in the 13s. Strongly desired by the brothers Antonio and Arturo Sergio and by Massimiliano Rosati, owners of the historic venue, the raincoat had been placed there on July XNUMX right next to the much-photographed table.

“We were very disappointed,” says Antonio Sergio. “The item had a symbolic value since it was a copy. We have no idea who it really was, except that yesterday the place was very crowded, including foreigners.” The beige trench coat with a checked interior was similar to the one worn in the TV adaptation by actor Lino Guanciale. And Vincenzo Canzanella himself, who keeps about 16 items in his atelier in Piazza Sant’Eligio, explained when he donated it three months ago that it was “an exact copy of the one worn by the actor in the drama.”

And who knows if those who stole it will now decide to return it, understanding its strong symbolic and non-economic value. “We want to emphasize that the place is safe – adds Massimiliano Rosati – and drinking a coffee in the internal room next to the Commissioner's table and surrounded by works of art is always a very strong emotion.

We are sorry to see thefts like this because they take away an important piece of the collective imagination. Often they steal napkins to have a memento of the historic place, in the past cups, but we really did not expect such a gesture”.
