Dmitry Muratov, a Russian journalist, has been defending freedom of speech in Russia for decades under increasingly difficult conditions. In 1993 he was one of the founders of the independent daily newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the most independent newspaper in Russia today, with a fundamentally critical position towards the authorities.
