A train blocked due to a fault between the Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Centro Direzionale stops, with Circumvesuviana passengers forced to walk back to the station along the tracks.
It is the latest disruption to the Circumvesuviana railway, which connects the capital with a large area of the province, with problems with the overhead line, delays and cancellations of services. The episode was reported by a traveler and posted on social media.
"In Naples - the traveler reported - , between the Garibaldi and Centro Direzionale stops, the train from Baiano broke down. There was an explosion, followed by a strong light and a roar. We remained 40 minutes waiting for help until they decided to let us take a walk on the tracks".
Here's how the episode is told on the very popular Facebook page “Circumvesuviana: A Guide to Suppressions and Unsolved Mysteries“. The photo is accompanied by this ironic caption: “It’s not the second season of Squid Game, it’s the passengers of the Baiano/Napoli who reach Piazza Garibaldi on foot”.
“What happened a few hours ago on the Circumvesuviana is surreal, grotesque and at the same time very sad.
On board the train, departing from Baiano and headed to Naples, there were some controllers intent on monitoring the situation and fining passengers without tickets; suddenly, a few hundred meters from the Piazza Garibaldi station, the train broke down and remained stuck without electricity.
After moments of excitement, due to both the discomfort and the chaos created by the fines in progress, the passengers are forced to abandon the train using a single, unstable ladder. Among the passengers there are also elderly people who have difficulty abandoning the convoy. But it is not over; the passengers must first walk a hundred meters on the tracks to reach the station, then they must climb onto the platform alone, risking injury.
Beyond the clear ethical paradox that sees the controllers as protagonists intent on fining (rightly) people guilty of not having paid for a service that is drifting in real time, what creates discomfort is the inadequacy of the system in situations like these, with elderly and disabled people forced to get off the train with a dilapidated iron ladder”.
