A couple in life and art, Stefano Angelucci Marino and Rossella Gesini have been working with the masks of the commedia dell'arte for twenty years, and in recent years their research has shifted towards contemporary masks. Their latest work on Italian emigrants in South America in the 50s, Brethren (TSA 2019), gave breath to this particular expressive code born from the suggestions created by the murals and the “bamboloni” of Boca, the famous barrio porteño in Argentina characterized by a strong Italian influence.
Queen Mother, the show they are bringing to the stage at the Teatro Civico 14, is a two-character comedy set in our days. Alfredo, a gray fifty-year-old marked by the double failure of a failed marriage, which still involves him, and by a journalistic activity in which he has not managed to emerge, one day shows up at his mother's house declaring his determination to stay there to be able to assist her in her illness. In reality he harbors the secret intention of making a scoop as an unscrupulous reporter: to tell the story of the last months and the death of the old lady.
A tense duel thus begins between the two characters on stage, conducted through an uninterrupted exchange of blackmail and retaliation, lies and fabrications. In the end, the son will succumb, but, as always happens in couples tied for life and death, here too it will not be possible or legitimate to distinguish the winner from the loser.
