Scafati, he sold protected species turtles online: reported

The military personnel of the Salerno CITES Carabinieri Unit and the Salerno Environmental Police Investigation Unit, assisted by the association “Agriambiente Onlus” of Naples, at the end of a complex online investigation activity with the use of IT tools and dedicated databases, discovered the trade of animal species protected by the Washington Convention, in this case young specimens of the “Testudo Hermanni Hermanni” tortoise.

The investigations carried out allowed us to hypothesize that the turtles were offered for sale in the absence of the necessary documentation/authorization certification required for all animal and plant species in danger of extinction, in violation of the provisions of EC Regulation no. 338/97.

The military then carried out a surprise check on the person identified as the person proposing the sale and found 12 specimens of the aforementioned turtle in the trunk of his car with an estimated commercial value of approximately 1.500 euros. In light of what was ascertained, they proceeded with the immediate seizure of the reptiles and their transfer to a suitable facility located in the municipality of Monte Miletto to which they were entrusted. They then reported the thirty-three-year-old perpetrator of the crime to the Judicial Authority.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, better known as CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is an international agreement signed in Washington in 1973 that regulates international trade in wild fauna and flora in danger of extinction and has the specific purpose of preventing the commercial exploitation of endangered species. Violations of the convention produce multiple risks: they cause the extinction of protected species and alter the balance of the ecosystem since the introduction of foreign species into a habitat exposes the habitat itself to the risk of genetic alteration and pollution.
