The Carabinieri of the Group of Torre Annunziata in fact they executed a custodial order issued by the office of the Judge for Preliminary Investigations at the Court of Naples, at the request of the local Public Prosecutor's Office – District Anti-Mafia Directorate, against 19 people seriously accused, to varying degrees, of Mafia, extortion aggravated by mafia methods, carrying and possession of firearms, all belonging to the opposing Camorra clans “GIONTA” and “IV SISTEMA” operating in the Torre Annunziata area.
The provision was issued following a complex investigation activity coordinated by the DDA of Naples and conducted by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of Torre Annunziata, from May 2020 to July 2021, started in the aftermath of the attempted murder of Carpenters Joseph (cl.70), considered a prominent member of the clan and son-in-law of the leader of the detained gang Valentino Gionta (cl. 53), also affected by today's provision because he is still believed to be at the top of the organization, availing himself of the collaboration of his closest family members, including the daughter Teresa (cl. 74), the same Carpenter and thenamesake nephew Valentino Gionta (cl. 83).
The investigations have drawn on top elements of the Gionta clan (also known as the Valentini), ascertaining their ability to control the territory through mafia intimidation, the oppressive extortion network to the detriment of local economic activities and the ability to militarily confront the opposing factions, thanks to the availability of weapons and explosives. And it is precisely in the armed conflict between the clans that the ambush on Carpentieri Giuseppe, which took place on May 6, 2020, matured, for the execution of which the brothers have been reached by serious evidence of guilt Easter Cherillo (cl. 84) and Luca (cl. 89), both currently detained, believed to be promoters of the newly formed clan called "IV SISTEMA", based in the working-class neighborhood of “Penniniello Park” and moved by feelings of revenge for the murder of their grandfather Christmas Shoe, committed on June 14, 2006 in an ambush carried out by hitmen from the Gionta clan.
