The origins of cartomancy

But what are the origins of cartomancy? There are numerous versions, sometimes in conflict with each other, about the birth of this art. According to some, for example, the roots of cartomancy must be sought in China, where this activity was considered an offshoot of dominoes, which in the past was a means of knowing the will of the gods and not a simple game. A different theory, however, hypothesizes that it was the Egyptians the first who could be considered masters in this field.

Alliette's theory

In the second half of the 18th century the French Alliette he wrote an essay on this topic, and stated that the only book that had managed to survive the flames that had hit the library of Alexandria spoke, coincidentally, of cartomancy. In ancient Egypt, it was practiced with 78 cards, which at the time were not paper but very thin gold leaves, on which were engraved hieroglyphics steeped in mystery. The priests, reading these hieroglyphics, had the ability to predict the future.

From hieroglyphics to cards

As time goes by, the hieroglyphics disappeared and gave way to many other figures rich in symbolism. You can go to Spain to find confirmation of this in the medieval era, but the same is true for Germany and, in a later period, for France. Until, more or less around the middle of the sixteenth century, the first attempt was made to regulate this divinatory art and predict some specific rules. It was Guillaume Postel who published the volume entitled “Key to Occult Things” (in the original language, “Clef des Choses cachées”), thanks to which the Birth of modern cartomancy according to the characteristics attributed to it and which we still recognize today. The same goes for the tarot, still used today although with some variations.

Tarot cards for fortune telling

In fact, for fortune telling, they use 78 Tarot Cards, which are divided into two groups. There are, in fact, the 22 Major Arcana and the 56 Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana include a vast range of symbolic figures that have a direct relationship with universal concepts, such as the tower, the hanged man, the lovers, the chariot, the hermit, the popess, the fool, justice, the wheel of fortune, and so on. The minor Arcana, on the other hand, are visual in four suits, namely the swords, the cups, the coins and the wands.
