Al MAV of Herculaneum, Virtual Archaeological Museum, is a digital Christmas tree to welcome visitors who, numerous, already several thousand since December 3, have flocked to see the photographic exhibition Il Formidable Mountain, Vesuvius in the photographs of the Alinari Archive.

The exhibition, curated by Rita Scartoni e Victor Ragone, is the story of Vesuvius, the formidable mountain, and its surrounding area through the photographs of the author.

An extraordinary journey, divided into two sections of 58 works. The first, Vesuvius – between photography of the Grand Tour and experimentation, it explores the cultural panorama of an era, the development of iconographic models during a period of great interest and demand for photographs as travel souvenirs.

The second, Eruptions, tells the story of the other side of Vesuvius, the threatening and destructive one, with the devastating effects of its wrath on things and people, through a type of photography that, increasingly accessible to everyone, sets itself the goal of storytelling, of documenting facts and emotions.

The project, produced by the Cives/Mav Foundation of Ercolano with the Alinari Foundation for photography and in collaboration with the web-magazine Foglieviaggi, with the contribution of the Campania Region and the support of Scabec, is part of Campania Cultura, the first digital ecosystem, created in Italy by the Campania Region, with the collaboration of SCABEC, one of whose lines of action is the ARCCA program – ARchitettura della Conoscenza Campana, with the aim of bringing together all the regional cultural heritage in a single digital platform.
