The world of gaming and lotteries is often demonized. Yet, according to the European Lottery Industry Association Report 2020, these stereotypes are often unjustified.

Il European Lotteries report is the fifteenth bulletin published to help understand how members work and what contributions they make to civil society. 2020, as we know, was a unique year in the history of humanity: a health crisis, then an economic and social one, the largest in modern history. National lotteries saw the partial and total closure in some cases of retail networks, an emergency for players, retailers, partners and employees. But the Lotteries, stoically, made their contribution. The experts of RichBonus they underline how “Lotteries have always helped, even from a non-financial point of view".

What have lotteries done, according to the report? Well, they have provided medical devices to hospitals, food deliveries to the most vulnerable, health awareness campaigns, supporting employees and partners of the retail network. Corporate social responsibility, in a word. At BonusRicchi they are sure: “Covid has had its devastating impact, but national lotteries have been able to innovate, both towards their players and by going outside their natural habitat. The online channel has also experienced an important development in terms of security and safe and sustainable marketing strategies".

In 2020 alone, 47 EL members in the European Union provided money and support to the community, for a total of 14,2 billion euros. The funds were distributed towards sports, good causes and taxes for the treasury. The contribution to society of EL members amounts to 52% of the GGR generated by them. In the major European states, EL funds exceeded 2 billion euros. In France they were 3,2, in Germany 3,1, in Spain 2,5. An average of 32 euros per capita in 2020 approximately the return to society.

Specifically, Covid has produced a decrease in GGR of 14,8% compared to 2019, partly covered by online, whose GGR growth was 3,6 billion, 11,7% of the total GGR of 2020, 25,7% of the total annual increase. The transition to online was accompanied by the usual technical and product innovations, with the opening of new systems by EL members. Positive data for employment. In 2020, the 46 EL members in the European Union directly employed 42.206 full-time employees. Responsible gaming activities have been integrated, to prevent problem gambling in a catastrophic phase for millions of players. The contribution to society, in this case, has been of fundamental importance to avoid the degeneration of the entire situation.
