The court of Naples named after Alessandro Criscuolo. Cartabia, “A model and guiding light jurist, he was the one who wanted me at the Consulta”
As of today, the Palace of Justice in Naples is named after Alessandro Criscuolo, a long-time jurist, former president of the Constitutional Court between 2014 and 2016, of which he was a judge since 2008, who passed away in March two years ago.
“A protagonist of the entire Italian judicial experience – remembers the Keeper of the Seals Marta Cartabia who Criscuolo himself wanted as vice-president at the time of the Consulta – and who had a rare gift: he was a man who knew how to give way. Not only did he not like the limelight and the spotlight, he willingly gave way to others, with his always elegant, always refined ways, inspired perhaps by that natural noble humility that characterized him”.
“Sandro Criscuolo – Cartabia recalled – he was elected to the Constitutional Court by the Court of Cassation and is one of those very rare cases, I don't know if the only one, of being elected in the first round with unanimous consent. What was the secret of his personality? Surely there is the eminent jurist of the great Neapolitan school, but no less decisive are the virtues of the man, capable of becoming a model and a teacher".
The personal memory resulting from shared experiences at the Consulta is inevitable. “He was very generous towards me. – the minister underlined during the open-air ceremony – when he wanted me at the Constitutional Court, an almost subversive choice, also because I had recently arrived and belonged to a different generation, also a different education, I came from the academy, but for me it was a real privilege. And he never made me feel the distance in any way. The relationship with him was easy and natural, he had a truly gentle soul, how many times he said 'I don't like to command'. When he presided over the Court he had to give some commands, but his was an authority that made itself heard without ever imposing itself, with interventions that were always measured but always incisive. I consider him a model, for many judges, for many young people who will look at this name as a beacon of a path to follow”.
