Antonia Calabrese's new novel is coming out, “Alyssa's Punishment“, a contemporary fantasy inspired by the archetypes of the mermaid-woman and the nymph-woman in which components of moral conflict and identity crisis emerge.

Three female figures between myth and reality, the grandmother, the daughter and the granddaughter, and their respective torments and obsessions.

From the treacherous sea of Homeric tales a siren has migrated to the Sicilian coasts where she cries for all her lost love. During her journey between sea and land she has left behind innocent and unaware victims. A second chance to pay dearly is the one given to her by Calypso.

Alyssa regrets her lost self through an unusual itinerary, a metaphor for the common discomfort of being men and gods at the same time, an infinite spirit condemned to ephemeral existences.

Curious about the playful activities of young humans, one summer night Alyssa discovers at her own expense what she will be ready to teach her daughter: that is, what it costs to have a soul.

No one knows about the story that led her around the world. Her niece, Malyka, is determined to discover her secret. The situation collapses because of forbidden desire, incestuous love that leads the girl to identify with the protagonist of her readings and pushes her to take on dangerous behaviors.

"I wrote this book to highlight the human tribulation of being an infinite spirit condemned to fleeting existences, imperishable souls forced into fleeting appearances; to tell of the discomfort of the divine entity enslaved to the earthly dimension, of being men and women and at the same time gods and to underline how difficult it is to free oneself. – says Antonia Calabrese – to remember that, as Alyssa loved to repeat, "having a soul costs, there is always a price to pay for being yourself" and sooner or later we learn it at our own expense".
