Black hole photographed, Neapolitan astrophysicist De Laurentis: 'Unprecedented result'
“The observations provide further support that spacetime around black holes is described by solutions of general relativity, regardless of their mass.”.
Mariafelicia De Laurentis, professor of Astrophysics at the Federico II University of Naples and researcher at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), member of the Scientific Council and coordinator of the Gravitational Physics group of EHT- Event Horizon Telescope, scientist who led the paper on gravity tests, says this while commenting on the result of the research that led to the photo of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
“Studies on the galactic center have allowed us to perform many tests of general relativity over the years – De Laurentis tells the DIRE agency – but the result presented today is unprecedented because it allows many original measurements on gravity and to do new science on supermassive black holes and their role in the evolution of the Universe: we have opened the doors of an extraordinary new laboratory”.
