Caserta . After several months of intense work, a huge waste dump located in the municipality of Capua has finally been remediated. The dump was identified by the Compagnia di Capua finance police in February 2021 and subsequently seized by the investigating judge of the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
It is a large area of about 2500 square meters located near the banks of the Volturno River, just outside the historic center of the "Queen of the Volturno", where over time large quantities of special and hazardous waste had accumulated (crushed asbestos sheets, bituminous sheaths, tires, paint cans, household appliances and waste materials from construction and demolition activities, etc.) illegally dumped by a citizen of Capua who had illegally occupied the state-owned area.
Following the seizure, an administrative procedure was initiated with the relevant authorities aimed at obtaining from the land owner the remediation of the entire area, taking into account that the materials deposited there, with the passage of time and exposure to atmospheric agents, could have caused serious damage to the surrounding ecosystem, with the consequent risk of irreversible pollution of the soil and aquifers.
In fact, already from the first investigations carried out following the seizure, it emerged that a short distance from the area was the Capuano Municipal Stadium, regularly used by the local Football School and the Capua Sports Fishing Association.
The complex waste removal operations, conducted by a specialized company on the basis of a precise and binding executive project approved by the competent authority, allowed the disposal of a total of approximately 80.000 kg of waste, a large part of which was buried.
The above operations were carried out under the constant supervision of the financial police of the Capua Company who, among other things, verified the regular execution of the planned soil scarification and characterization activities, necessary to ascertain any contamination of the environmental matrices.
The positive conclusion of the complex judicial and administrative process represents a virtuous model of synergy between the repressive action conducted by the judiciary and the police forces to combat the serious and widespread phenomenon of illegal waste abandonment and the consequent administrative activity aimed at the reclamation and restoration of the areas involved, with consequent tangible benefits for both the environment and health.
of the community.
