On Friday 27th May at 18,30 pm, Luigi Caravano's personal exhibition entitled I just wanted to play with you.
The exhibition is part of the program to promote new artistic personalities, a project that the Museo-FRaC Baronissi has been conducting for years in the Salerno and regional area. This one dedicated to Luigi Caravano offers a first substantial cross-section of the recent creative production of this young artist from Salerno, concentrated above all on the three cycles that have characterized his work, during the long period of the COVID19 pandemic: in order "Box" started in 2020, "Into" and "Circle".
"The extreme essentiality of Luigi Caravano's sign – writes Massimo Bignardi in the introductory text to the catalogue published by Gutenberg Edizioni –, translates the restlessness, the uncertainty, the solitude that are the black mirror of surmodernité: essentiality, which was clearly evident in the works exhibited by our artist, in 2019, on the occasion of the personal exhibition “Float”, promoted in Salerno by the Galleria Studio Legale.
In them, Caravano lets the sign move freely like a tightrope walker, suspended on the tightrope between the conventional composition of writing and the imaginative registers of drawing, in short with the process of abstraction that is specific to it.
The process of synthesis that the artist has operated on his own language is clear: from the comparison with previous works, I think, for example, of the diptych Il gioco delle piccole cose, a mixed technique on plexiglass, from 2010, exhibited with other paintings, on the occasion of the first personal exhibition, set up at the Centro Einaudi in Salerno and curated by Alfonso Amendola, it is clear how he felt the need for a different narrative score, in short that the sign was not shouted in the manner of the writings, I am talking about the original ones and not of our own hyperrealist muralists.
This has led him to prefer a narrative in cycles that allows him to keep together two aspects that stimulate his interests the most. If on the one hand, writing originates streams of water that vivify a personality that is substantially little inclined to open up, choosing, at times, the hermeticism of the completely white or black sheet – as recorded in the “Box” cycle that begins in 2020 –, on the other hand, the abstract sign deprives us of any referential approach.
It is a sign that emerges on the surface, transcribing the lightness of a trace that speaks to us of existence, that is, the expression of a reaction, to paraphrase Calvino, "to the weight of living".
