A note from the municipalities of Capri and of Anacapri signed by the two mayors Marino Lembo and Alessandro Scoppa was sent this morning to the mayor of Sorrento Massimo Coppola to express "regret and perplexity" for what was declared yesterday by the mayor who, addressing the problem of transport on the peninsula, brought up the two island municipalities through a phrase that the two colleagues, Marino Lembo and Alessandro Scoppa, reported in full in the protest note: "The truth is that we are an island, but without having the privileges, as happens for example in Capri and Anacapri", he said.
An expression that irritated the two mayors of the blue island who in the note sent this morning to Coppola, replied: "It is a phrase that leaves us perplexed in style and institutional opportunity and requires us to respond for two main reasons. The first is that we do not understand the need to drag our island into the debate regarding its requests to supra-municipal bodies by creating comparisons that are not functional to the debate itself.
Secondly, please specify what privileges you are referring to, as the island status undoubtedly brings with it some benefits but also many disadvantages”. “You forget, in fact – the two mayors continue – that due to a banal day of bad weather our fellow citizens cannot access schools or specialized care that are on the mainland.
And vice versa, in the case of employees, doctors and transporters of goods, they cannot reach us to work, treat us and supply our activities”. The two mayors Lembo and Scoppa also specified that they do not want to open an institutional controversy because, they write, “it is our precise conviction of the absolute need for cohesion and unity of purpose between Municipalities, Metropolitan City and Campania Region, beyond the territorial claims of each, legitimate until they cross the line into invasions of competences, which appear to us to be very little useful for the purposes of a serious debate on the general improvement of services and quality of life of the citizens we administer, which is the ultimate goal of our daily action”.
"The Administrations of Capri and Anacapri - the note concludes - realize that creating a system is sometimes complicated. Nonetheless, they are convinced that, in order to enhance our splendid territories with a strong overall vision, much more effective than a division into watertight compartments, that of cohesion is a path that is absolutely necessary and useful to follow. Let us say, however, that statements like yours make this path less easy".
