The Tirana police announced in a statement that 60 Roma and Feyenoord fans were arrested following incidents that occurred this evening in various areas of the city, with clashes with the police and expulsions.
Drunk Dutch fans hit an Albanian man with a chair after he showed his support for the Italian team and the victim was “rushed” to hospital, according to a police statement.
A group of around 200 Feyenoord fans clashed with police as they tried to reach an area where Roma fans were gathered. The Italian club's supporters then attacked the police with stones and sticks.
“Ten policemen were injured” and a police bus was damaged by the “acts of violence”, police said. Clashes between supporters of the two teams also broke out in at least three locations in the Albanian capital, an AFP reporter noted.
While the capacity of the national stadium where the match will be held today is only 21.000, at least 100.000 fans are expected to attend the match in Tirana. Authorities said they will be divided into zones for fans and will have to watch the match on giant screens. Around 2.000 security officers police are mobilized to ensure the safety of the event.
