In fact, the confirmed or reported cases continue to increase and, to date, have exceeded 200 in the world, while in Italy the infections have risen to nine.
Meanwhile, the Covid-19 epidemic is further loosening its grip and the number of infections is further decreasing despite a poor response to vaccination with the third and fourth doses for the categories indicated. On the front of monkeypox infections, a first case was also identified today in Emilia-Romagna and brings the total number of confirmed cases in our country to nine.
The patients taken care of by the Spallanzani Institute for Infectious Diseases in Rome are six and "the good news is that, especially the first ones, are already recovering", communicated Francesco Vaia, general director of Spallanzani, according to whom the quarantine for monkeypox is not necessary. In fact, "only those who are sick should be isolated: we must move forward with innovation, our health system must be able to move forward, otherwise it is the Middle Ages", he said.
Furthermore, there is no need for a "rush to get a vaccine: the phenomenon is limited and mild, and the lethality - the expert explained - is really low and mainly linked to immune problems". The Undersecretary of Health Pierpaolo Sileri also reiterates that there is no alarm at the moment: "The situation is definitely under control, this virus is completely different from SarsCov2, starting from the fact that it is not transmitted by air, and for this reason it is very unlikely that a pandemic like the one from Covid will be created".
The number of confirmed cases worldwide has now reached 219, not counting the countries where the disease is endemic. There are 19 countries, most of them in Europe, that have reported at least one confirmed case, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). “Most cases are found in young men who identify as homosexual.
There were no deaths”, specifies the European agency. In the meantime, the alert for Covid-19 is decreasing. In the last week, in fact, there has been a further sharp drop in infections (-29,6%), intensive care (-13,9%), ordinary hospitalizations (-16,2%) and deaths (-17%), according to the latest independent monitoring by the Gimbe Foundation for the period 18-24 May. In one month, however, the number of people discovered with the third dose has doubled, reaching over 4 million.
And for the fourth dose, administrations are slowing down with a coverage of 30,5% for the immunocompromised and 14% for other fragile people. The figures are also decreasing in the daily bulletin of the Ministry of Health: there are 20.322 new infections in the last 24 hours (yesterday 22.438) and the victims are 94 (yesterday 114). Instead, there are 262 patients hospitalized in intensive care, 9 fewer than yesterday, and those hospitalized in ordinary wards are 5.782, or 187 fewer.
Meanwhile, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have warned of the risk of relapses in Covid patients treated with the antiviral Paxlovid: some people who have used Paxlovid, the CDC specifies in a note, may have a return of symptoms between 2-8 days after the end of treatment and even if they had tested negative for the virus. Patients could therefore be infectious again. Finally, the Constitutional Court has ruled on the issue of quarantine: "The quarantine imposed on Covid-19 patients does not limit their personal freedom", the Constitutional Court has established with sentence no. 127 filed today.
