The Campania Region allocates 12 million euros for the restoration of the “Crypta Neapolitana”
The Campania Region will invest 12 million euros for the redevelopment and recovery of the “Crypta Neapolitana”, the tunnel built more than 2000 years ago that connected the city of Naples with the Phlegraean Fields.
The announcement was made by the president of the Campania Regional Council, Vincenzo De Luca, during a conference attended, among others, by the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and the director of the Polo Museale della Campania, Marta Ragozzino. The funds are partly European and partly drawn from the budgets of the institution on Via Santa Lucia.

“This is an asset of historical and artistic value of immeasurable value.“, the governor explained why “crossing this tunnel means crossing 2000 years of history. It is one of those works that without such important funding would never be done; it is a work that requires very delicate engineering interventions. But then we will return to Naples and to Italy a very important asset”. The static situation of the "crypta", in Manfredi's opinion, “it is quite compromised”.
For the mayor of Naples, the next step is to do “an executive project in a very detailed manner. We have already had studies done and it has emerged that there must be a consolidation”.
