Summer is upon us and many are planning a vacation. Some decide to fly to another country, but also some want to treat themselves to a road trip to visit local places. This idea could cost more than expected: the increases do not only concern fuel, but also highway tolls.
Increase in motorway tolls
According to the CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, Roberto Tomasi, a tariff increase of +1,58%: not the best for Italians, already tested by the recent price increases. It all depends on the growth in energy and raw material prices, which could not fail to spill over into this area.
Taking a step back, why is it necessary to pay a toll? First of all, it is a tax imposed on motorists for using a motorway. The collection is done through toll booths, placed at regular intervals along the route. These taxes are used to finance the construction of new motorways or the maintenance of existing ones. It goes without saying that it is a very useful tax, for which until last year no increases were expected.
In Italy, tolls are calculated based on the kilometers traveled, the type of vehicle and the characteristics of the highway. This means that tolls on a highway in the mountains will be higher than those on a flat highway. The reason is that roads with high traffic volumes and steep gradients are more expensive to maintain, so drivers have to pay more to use them. Tolls are calculated with a unit rate per kilometer, which is rounded up or down. A VAT of 22% is also applied to all.
How to save money while driving
Buying a used car is a great way to save on the purchase price, although it does come with some risks. However, if you do your research and are careful about where you buy, you can get a quality vehicle and save a lot of money. The easiest way is to look at online ads, for example if you are looking for a car for sale in Naples, which can be sifted through using various filters.
Perform regular maintenance. Taking care of your vehicle is essential to keep it running well and avoid costly repairs or even a breakdown during an important trip (like work). Make sure to check your oil levels regularly and change your tires when necessary - this will reduce the chance of problems in the future and help keep costs down!
Drive with your windows closed. It may seem counterintuitive at first, but keeping your windows closed helps reduce your engine's fuel consumption by reducing your car's aerodynamic drag. It also prevents dust from entering your vehicle, which reduces cleaning costs when dust begins to accumulate inside.
