The increase in electricity and gas bills has put the management of our savings to the test.
In fact, from 2020 to today, the price of home utilities has skyrocketed and it is necessary to find a way to cut expenses and save. But why have gas and electricity prices increased so much? What are the factors that have affected this increase in spending? And above all, how much have bills increased from 2020 to today?
Some research conducted by prontobolletta.it, confirm that the price of utilities has increased in the last two years by at least 80% and that the cost of utilities varies from region to region. Three factors in particular have determined this increase:
-
An increase in demand for gas: gas is an energy source that is still necessary today. Although it is still a fossil fuel, it is more “sustainable” than other sources such as oil and coal. An increased demand for methane (in gaseous or liquid form) determines an increase in supply prices.
-
The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has caused a rapid and steep increase: Russia is the main supplier of gas to Italy (importing about 40% of the total gas). The various cuts in supply have forced the Italian government to find new suppliers. Usually, when the supply of the product is low but the demand is very high, the price rises and by a lot.
-
The limited amount of green energy, such as wind and photovoltaic, does not cover the energy demand. Since the infrastructure and production of sustainable energy are still insufficient, it will be necessary to accelerate the ecological transition process.
Like a domino effect, the price of electricity has increased proportionally to gas. Precisely, methane is used to produce electricity: through thermoelectric power plants, the energy of fossil fuels is transformed into electricity. For this reason, the price of the electricity bill also increases.
Obviously, the increase in bills also weighs heavily on businesses, especially small and medium-sized ones: after the pandemic, the production of Italian companies has started to increase again and the increase in gas and electricity prices represents a major obstacle to growth.
Unlike gas and electricity, other household expenses such as internet have remained unchanged over time: according to some analyses by internet-home.com, the average price of the telephone bill is €27 per month.
What is the situation in the province?
To be more specific, the average cost of the gas bill in the province of Napoli increased by approximately 6,08% from 2020 to 2021 and by 78,68% from 2021 to 2022. This dizzying increase has certainly affected all regions of Italy. To be even clearer, as regards the municipalities of the province of Naples, the average price of the gas bill went from € 545,87 in 2020 to € 579,23 in 2021 to approximately € 1.035,11 this year.
And what about electricity?
Electricity, as mentioned above, has also undergone a significant increase in prices. Again in the province of Naples, the average cost of the electricity bill increased by 33,29% from 2021 to 2022 and by a whopping 85,57% from 2021 to 2022. For this reason, we have witnessed a jump in the price of the bill in the municipalities of the province of Naples: from € 355,05 in 2020 to € 473,26 in 2021 to a whopping € 874,76 today.
