Maddaloni, extracted limestone without authorization: quarry owner reported. Accused by the Caserta Forestry Carabinieri of pollution
The forestry carabinieri of Caserta seized two industrial warehouses attached to a limestone quarry in the municipality of Maddaloni (Caserta) for harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The owner was reported for environmental pollution and was given administrative sanctions of over 20 thousand euros.
The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, began in November 2019 after the Carabinieri, who intervened following numerous reports, found that two excavators equipped with pneumatic hammers were drilling the rock face of the quarry in the middle of the night; the military of the Environmental, Agri-food and Forestry Police Investigative Unit found that the owner had authorization only to carry out the project for the decommissioning and recovery of the quarry, but in reality he carried out mining activities and the transformation of the rock into concrete, quicklime and other products such as gypsum and bituminous conglomerates; polluting activities carried out without authorization for emissions into the atmosphere.
In April 2021, there was a new inspection by the Carabinieri, who discovered that over a thousand cubic meters of hazardous and non-hazardous waste (disused tires, building demolition waste, used oils, hazardous packaging) had been illegally abandoned in front of the quarry. The Prosecutor's Office led by Carmine Renzulli therefore requested the seizure of the warehouses where the unauthorized work was carried out, and the investigating judge granted it.
