Napoli. A fight between homeless people that broke out yesterday in the Galleria Umberto ended in the worst possible way. One was later found dead, abandoned among the scaffolding.
Degradation and violence continue to be the true protagonists of the Galleria Umberto I in Naples where it is clear that the situation is totally out of control.
The other evening, before the incredulous eyes of tourists, a furious brawl broke out between some homeless people who populate the arcades of the gallery. Some were armed with clubs.
“Councillor, this is the situation inside the gallery. Homeless people are fighting and screaming at the top of their lungs. We promptly alerted 112,” said one of the witnesses who spoke to the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli.
But the homeless emergency goes beyond fights.
“The other morning they found a lifeless homeless man in the Galleria under the scaffolding for the renovation, on the San Carlo side. It is always a great pity for the death of these people who unfortunately risk their lives every day by living like this. They are all heavy drinkers”, explains another citizen who turned to Borrelli.
“The situation has once again gotten out of hand and yet the problem continues to be ignored. The Galleria, one of the most symbolic monuments of the city, is abandoned to decay.
We have been asking for 24-hour surveillance and supervision for a long time, as was also promised to the condominiums, even after 24 pm when the Municipal Police officers finish duty. The other aspect to be addressed is precisely the homeless emergency that can no longer be managed as it has been done up to now.
These people cannot live in such conditions, we must restore their dignity and the gallery's decorum." - declared Councilor Borrelli.
