Lombardy has displaced Campania from the top spot in terms of the number of pizzerias. This is according to a survey by CNA Agroalimentare, which certifies a decline in activity in the central and southern regions and a positive trend in the large northern regions, resulting in pizza increasingly becoming a national dish.
The market study by the National Confederation of Crafts (Cna) and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, which analyzed all the activities that produce and/or distribute pizza (bakeries, delicatessens, pizzerias, rotisseries, takeaway pizzerias, bars, pizzerias, restaurants) and presented at the Pizza Village in Naples, reveals that between 2019 and 2021, pizza-related activities fell by 4,2%, or 5.366 units, falling overall to 121.529.
The decline has mostly affected the central and southern regions. The region - analysts report - that has suffered the most abrupt decline is Campania, which has lost 41,1% of its businesses, 7.173 in absolute numbers, falling to 10.263 pizzerias. Followed by Lazio (-34,8%), Abruzzo (-28,4%), Sicily (-14,8%), Umbria (-13%). On the other hand, Basilicata (+102,6%), Val d'Aosta (+75%), Friuli Venezia Giulia (+59,8%), Trentino Alto Adige (+39,5%) are growing.
More than positive trend for the large northern regions, in particular Lombardy increases the overall number of activities related to the world of pizza by 3.489 units (+24,6 percent) and displaces Campania from the highest step of the podium, reaching 17.660 activities. Emilia Romagna (+ 1.496 activities), Veneto (+ 1.268 activities) and Piedmont (+ 1.148 activities) also increase.
