In Sorrento, temporary ban on bathing in Marina Grande because traces of fecal bacteria were found. The mayor Massimo Coppola signed the order: “Temporary measure, new Arpac checks starting tomorrow".
This is a temporary solution which provides for the prohibition of bathing in Sorrento, in the Marina Grande EAST SIDE area. Thesigned order from the mayor Massimo Coppola number 209 of 16 July 2022 indicates “Concentration of fecal bacteria above the norm” but specifies that it would be “An isolated case” . Investigations into sewage discharges into the sea are underway.
The provision was issued following the collection of sea samples by theArpac on July 13th; the results were communicated in a note dated July 15th where it is stated “l'unfavorable outcome of the results of the analyses carried out on the sample taken on 13 July 2022 in the bathing water marked with the Code: IT 015063080005 Marina Grande EAST side, with consequent bathing ban until further notice".
So the analysis result communicated on July 15th have highlighted the exceeding of the limits both "for intestinal enterococci (406 Mpn/per 100 ml of water out of a maximum of 200) and for escherichia coli (2005 Mpn out of a limit of 500)". Analyses that will be repeated on July 18th to check whether the levels found on July 13th are still present.
Arpac had already taken samples in the months of April, May and June, with analysis results on the bacterial load content. always significantly lower than the limit values at every point of the monitoring network. Therefore the withdrawal made on 13/07/2022 is "isolated and in any case above the regulatory limits".
To clarify the matter, investigations have been started to determine the cause of the pollution of the non-swimming stretch of sea in Marina Grande. The Municipality has also alerted the technicians of GORI (water company) to verify whether the altered values could derive from problems in the sewer system.

The temporary bathing ban on the body of water, as per the attached ARPAC communication, marked by the sampling point code thus identified: IT015063080005 (Marina Grande EAST side) and having the following coordinates: Start Log. 14,36721 Lat. 40,62801 End Log. 14,36205 Lat. 40,62920 with the reservation of adopting the measure to revoke the aforementioned ban if the results of the water analyses carried out by ARPAC are favourable.
At the same time, PROVIDES 1. The publication of this ordinance on the website of the Municipality of Sorrento; 2. The transmission of this ordinance, with all effects and consequences of the Law to: – Ministry of Health – General Directorate – Prevention Department Office IX – Rome; – Ministry of the Environment – Water Protection Service – Div. III – Rome; – Campania Region – General Directorate for Health Protection and Coordination of the Regional Health System UOD 03 Prevention and Health Hygiene – Naples; – ARPAC Provincial Department (formerly LIP) – Naples; – Port Authority of Castellammare di Stabia (NA); – Local Maritime Office of Sorrento; – ASL Napoli 3 Sud – Prevention Department -; – GORI SpA that the managers of the bathing/commercial activities, each for their own competences and pertinence, provide information to their customers by applying the necessary reference signage on the establishments and areas granted in concession.
The Municipal Police Command is jointly responsible with the Maintenance Office for the application of signs with the words “Bathing Prohibited” in the areas of interest.
