Aversa, the guarantor of prisoners in Campania donates ventilators to the prison: “During the summer months, let’s help them not to live in double confinement.”

Fifty ventilators were donated to the inmates of the Aversa Prison (Caserta) by the Campania guarantor of the rights of persons subjected to restrictive measures of personal freedom, Samuele Ciambriello, who will make a similar donation, next week, together with the metropolitan guarantor of Naples, Pietro Ioia, to the inmates of the Neapolitan prison of Poggioreale.

“The fact that in prison you stay in the cold is a commonplace – says, ironically, Cambriello – In the summer months, it is necessary to undertake initiatives in prisons that allow inmates to avoid experiencing double confinement.

If the waiting hours for family meetings were reduced, if more time off and alternative measures were granted, if prisoners were given the opportunity to take an hour of fresh air not under the scorching sun, but perhaps in the late afternoon, if showers or fountains were installed in the walking areas, if recreational activities were organized, if the locks were kept open for longer since the cells are cement crematoriums and bunk beds, if fans were allowed to be purchased on a survival basis, if at the health level there was greater attention for elderly prisoners, for the obese, for heart patients and diabetics, if politics reclaimed its role and, especially in the months from June to September, went to visit the prisons, from regional councilors to parliamentarians, then yes we would have a more humane prison and we could talk about dignified detention”.

“The prison – concludes the guarantor – it should not be 'governed' by people who are full of themselves, self-referential and vindictive, but by those who in the narrative advance ifs and doubts, proposing resolutions. Especially in these months of strong heat, it is important to put forward ideas that help not only prisoners, but also prison officers and all operators to live better in the penitentiary institution".
