Benevento, first zero-emission hydrogen building inaugurated

It was inaugurated on Thursday 7th July in Benevento the first building a best before date ed emissions zeroThe residential building was designed and built by Technological District for the Sustainable Constructions Stress and by 'University of the Sannio as a full-scale demonstrator intervention of the SMART CASE research project “Innovative multifunctional solutions for the optimization of primary energy consumption and indoor livability in the building system”.

The production of renewable energy from solar and geothermal sources has been added to the installation of a fuel cell 100% powered by hydrogen for the combined production of energy power e heat necessary to meet the energy needs of the building which currently houses two students of the inter-university master's degree course in Biomedical Engineering.

Ennio Rubino, president of the Technological District for Sustainable Construction Stress: “Before it was Nzero energy building now hidrogen zero emission building, we are going to test a fuel cell which is actually an object that uses hydrogen to produce electricity and heat without emitting CO2. It is a promising technology, the solid oxide one, and it is the first application at a national level and I would say in some respects at a European level, as far as a real case of a building is concerned because the peculiarity of this building is that in addition to being inhabited it is technologically very equipped in terms of sensors and in terms of energy technologies: there is the photovoltaic part, solar thermal, geothermal. There is a mix of technologies and energy vectors, here we have everything”.

Benevento, Its University , Campania host the first installation in Europe and for Ruby it's a great result: "here we have done a great operation, we have brought a national and European champion of the realization of these technologies here in Campania, we chose us. We have been competitive for our ability to demonstrate that we are proactive, test it and target businesses, because those who generate work and GDP are businesses".

The initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration born within the Italian Association for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells – H2IT between Stress and the Italian company Solid Power SpA and which found application in the demonstration building of the University of Sannio.

This is the first machine that is put into the field with 100% hydrogen operation on Italian territory, for us it is a source of pride to have it in the Sannio headquarters of the University of Benevento".
