La Campania It is in 3rd place for value generated by the Second Hand Economy in Italy with 2,4 billion euros and in 1st place for average per capita earnings for those who sell of € 0 per year.
Milan, 28 July 2022 – Second hand is now a habitual consumer behavior of Italians, who not only appreciate the opportunity to save and earn and the possibility of making space by getting rid of objects they no longer use, but who are now increasingly sensitive to the issue of sustainability and waste reduction.
In this context, Campania stands out among the most virtuous regions, both for the results in terms of value generated and in terms of reduction of environmental impact as a consequence of the second-hand economy, confirming its primacy as the greenest region in Italy thanks to second-hand.
According to the Second Hand Economy Observatory conducted by BVA Doxa* for Subito, the #1 platform in Italy for buying and selling sustainably, with over 13 million unique monthly users**, in 2021 Campania generated a value of 2,4 billion and an average per capita earnings for those who sold used items of €1.626 per year. A figure above the national average (€1.121) which places Campania in first place among Italian regions in terms of average earnings for those who sold used items.
Furthermore, by choosing the second-hand economy and giving things a second life, the people of Campania have avoided their disposal in landfill, CO2 emissions and the environmental costs of producing a new good, contributing to an effective reduction in their environmental impact which the study “Second Hand Effect 2021” commissioned by Subito to IVL – Swedish Environmental Research Institute***, has quantified in a saving of over 896.000 tons of CO2.
What exactly does it mean to save over 896 thousand tons of CO2?
According to the results of the study, Campania once again celebrates first place on the podium of the greenest regions in Italy with a saving of 896.635 tons of CO2 thanks to the sale of over 2,5 million objects on Subito in 2021, equal to almost 14% of the national total.
Saving over 896 thousand tons of CO2 corresponds to zeroing the environmental impact of 122.827 citizens of Campania, but also to a Milan without traffic for 6 months, or to having avoided over 12 million flights Milan - Rome.
In addition to carbon dioxide emissions, the second-hand effect also occurs on the saving of raw materials such as plastic, aluminum and steel. Thanks to buying and selling on Subito in 2021 alone, Campania citizens managed to save 51.665 tons of plastic, 349.644 tons of steel and 33.359 tons of aluminum.
