The first criminal section of the Court of Cassation has annulled, with referral, the life sentences handed down to four leading members of the Pozzuoli Camorra.

They were all accused of being the instigators and material executors of the double homicide of Domenico Sebastiano and Salvatore Bellofiore, murdered in the Toiano district of Pozzuoli, in 1997. The maximum sentence had been handed down to Salvatore Cerrone, Nicola Palumbo, Gennaro Longobardi and Gaetano Beneduce, all detained under the 41bis regime, the latter two bosses defended by the lawyer Domenico De Rosa.

Longobardi and Beneduce have already been convicted of Camorra-type criminal association in the investigation into fish market of Pozzuoli in 2000. The defense team was also composed of the lawyers Antonio Abet, Valerio Accorretti, Claudio D'Avino, Luca Gili and Stefano Sorrentino.

The double homicide determined the rise, in the criminal power of Pozzuoli, of Longobardi and Beneduce, the latter the only one who did not take part, due to eyesight problems, in the raid using 12-gauge shotguns loaded with buckshot.

“The trial must be redone, before the Court of Appeal of Naples,” commented lawyer Domenico De Rosa, “and this decision confirms the need to always pay attention to the quality of the statements made by collaborators, in this trial over ten were involved.”
