Salerno, work on the Porta Ovest Gallery: from today the bans on heavy vehicles

In recent weeks, the Prefecture di Salerno was affected by the resumption of work relating to the completion of the “West Gate” Gallery, announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility.

This is a strategic work that will allow the area of ​​the Porto with theA3 Highway “Naples-Pompeii-Salerno” by virtue of a specific “Convention” signed in November 2021 between the same Ministry, the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, the company “Napoli-Pompei-Salerno” spa, concessionaire of the motorway section, and the municipality of Salerno.

In particular, the planned works interfere with some works located along the A3, including the “Olivieri” Viaduct, and will consist, in the current phase, of a final excavation activity, for a length of 20 metres (so-called diaphragm), in the part underneath the viaduct.

The topic, of particular relevance especially for the possible consequences in terms of traffic, especially in a "hot" period such as the summer exodus, was examined in depth during a series of meetings with the participation of all the interested parties.

The process, in fact, involved, in addition to the signatories of the "Convention", also Region Campania, Town \ Province di Salerno, Mayors of the municipalities of Angri, Cava de 'Tirreni, Nocera Lower e Vietri Sul Mare, Compartment Police Road for Campania e Basilicata, Forces of Police, brigade of fire, concessionary companies of all types motorway e road pertaining to the territory of the province of Salerno (ANAS “A2 del Mediterraneo”, ANAS Campania Department, Autostrade per l’Italia/Direction VI Cassino Section) as well as Inter-University Consortium for Forecast , Prevention of the Big Risks ofUniversity of Fisciano, appointed by thePort System Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea of control and monitoring of the work.

Following the technical-operational investigations, it emerged, on the one hand, that the works could not be postponed, as reported by the client of the project in order to guarantee the safe resumption of excavation operations; on the other hand, the need to provide for a limitation on the traffic of "heavy vehicles" on the "Viadotto Olivieri" in conjunction with the execution of the works, estimated at a total of 60 days.

Therefore, starting "from 7:00 on 7 July 2022 until 7:00 on 7 September 2022" a provision will come into force which provides for "the prohibition on the transit of vehicles with a total mass exceeding 7,5 tonnes, on the following sections of the motorway A3 Salerno-Pompeii-Naples:

  • on the southbound carriageway, for vehicles coming from the north, from Km 42+200 to Km 51+600, in the section between the Cava de' Tirreni and Salerno junctions;
  • on the northbound carriageway, for vehicles coming from the south, from Km 51+600 to Km 42+800 in the section between the Salerno and Cava de Tirreni junctions.

Alternative routes:

in a southerly direction
vehicles with a mass exceeding 7,5 tonnes must exit at the Cava de' Tirreni junction
light and heavy traffic recommended exit SS 268 before the Angri toll booth of the A3 and continue along the A30

heading north
vehicles with a mass exceeding 7,5 tonnes must exit at the Salerno Centro junction
light and heavy traffic exit A2 Raccordo SA-AV and continue along the A30

At the same time, the Operational Committee for Roads shared the operational aspects related to both the management of motorway and ordinary roads falling under the jurisdiction of the province of Salerno, and to civil protection profiles, in anticipation of any emergency situations that may arise, also with the involvement of the Regional Civil Protection for the possible use of the volunteer component in case of need.

The situation is being carefully monitored by the Prefecture – in this regard, an initial briefing has already been called for the afternoon of July 7, the date of the start of the works, in relation to any “corrections” to be made during the works to the planning prepared to alleviate possible traffic disruptions – in coordination with the central bodies.
