Motorboat sunk at Galli, Punta Campanella: “Remove it immediately, there is a risk of diesel leaking.”
The Marine Protected Area has already sent a warning to the shipowner. Letters also to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and to the Region. Continuous contacts with the Port Authority for investigations. Yesterday's inspection: “The situation is under control but there is a risk of diesel leakage”
An inspection at Galli to verify the situation after the fire and the sinking of the motorboat in recent days in the middle of zone B of the Marine Park and in the SIC area (Site of Community Interest). The President and the Director of the Punta Campanella MPA, Lucio Cacace and Alberico Simioli, wanted to verify the situation in person.
“At the moment there are no serious diesel leaks, as emerged from a superficial survey, also thanks to the excellent work carried out by the Port Authority which promptly activated the emergency intervention of the ConsorIo Castalia which contained the dispersion of fuel into the sea. – they let us know from the Park -. But we must act quickly, remove the motorboat as soon as possible, because there could be a serious risk of the remaining part of the hull breaking, with possible diesel leakage from the tanks".
In the meantime, in the last few days, the Punta Campanella MPA had promptly sent a formal notice to the shipowner, requesting a rapid intervention and an effective recovery plan for the wreck, which lies at a depth of 35 meters near Gallo Lungo. The shipowner assured that time would be tight and that he would send a recovery plan to the Marine Park and the Port Authority of Salerno as soon as possible to obtain clearance.
The Punta Campanella MPA is also constantly informing the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Region and, to be on the safe side, has already urgently activated the procedures for assigning a consultancy assignment to a highly specialized technician to support the assessments of the recovery plan that the shipowner will present.
And also to plan the remediation of the area. The investigations are still ongoing and the Park is in constant contact with the Port Authority of Salerno and Castellammare di Stabia, with which it has immediately established a constant collaboration both in terms of information and of more suitable solutions to solve this problem, each for their own skills. We need to understand the causes of the fire and also whether the motorboat was violating the rules of the Marine Protected Area at the time of the accident.
At the beginning of the summer, the Marine Park launched a social campaign for compliance with the rules of the Protected Area and the Director Alberico Simioli, a few weeks ago, had launched an appeal and an alarm: "Too many boats in the area, there is a need for more controls".
In particular, the Punta Campanella MPA has requested that the Port Authority of Massa Lubrense be equipped with at least one vessel that can monitor the Park's regulations and safety at sea.
An appeal to provide the Police with adequate support for the precious and difficult work they carry out, often in difficult conditions, given the limited resources and men available.
“The high danger posed by the presence of a large number of vessels requires careful reflection on the issue – we read in the note that the Director of the Punta Campanella MPA sent to the Ministry and the Region – For the next summer season, this management is engaged in preparing a plan, to be brought to the attention of the Board of Directors of the Authority, for the regulation of nautical pleasure boating, to be implemented according to the "precautionary" principle and based on: limiting the number of boats, easy recognition of authorized boats, activation of an insurance policy for the entire area to cover environmental damages that will necessarily have to be paid by the nautical companies operating in the area and that determine a high risk for the entire MPA (3 sinkings in 45 days), agreement with the police for constant monitoring".
