Salerno. A bomb scare has been triggered in Tramonti, the mountain village overlooking the Amalfi Coast, famous for the goodness of its food and for being the birthplace of the famous pastry chef Sal De Riso.
A man at dawn today found a bomb between his feet while looking for mushrooms. It happened in the locality of Chiancolelle, high in the mountains in the municipality of Tramonti.
During the search, a resident of the area discovered the device. The man immediately moved away to call the Carabinieri who, once they arrived on the scene, cordoned off the area before requesting the intervention of their specialized colleagues from the 21st Regiment of Engineers of Caserta for the safe disarming operations on site, scheduled for Wednesday 20.
The operation will be followed by the clearing of the area. It is an American-made hand grenade, a war relic from the Second World War, which remained unexploded for almost eighty years. That very area was the scene of a bloody battle between the Americans and the Germans the day after the Allied landing on Maiori beach, on September 9, 1943.
The Chiunzi Pass was a strategic outpost (there was an important radio installation) and after the continuous bombings, in a few days the Americans managed to conquer those heights which were previously in German hands.
