Poste Napoli, a book celebrates the 160th anniversary of the historic building in Piazza Matteotti, which has always been an artistic heritage of the city.

In the year in which Poste Italiane celebrates its 160th anniversary, the Post Office Buildings continue to represent a point of reference on the national territory and to be a symbol of the architectural beauty and history of Italy. The Post Office Building of Naples, today as yesterday, is the emblem of an era and plays a role of indisputable historical testimony and majestic authority.

In particular, the building in Piazza Matteotti, inaugurated in 1936, has always been a symbolic building of the city: having survived the bombings and dynamite attacks of the Second World War, it stands majestically in the square of the same name, almost as if to testify to its neglect over time.

Its monumentality is due to the purity of the lines that distinguish it and to the high technological content contained within it: cutting-edge construction materials, innovative systems and equipment for the time, such as pneumatic post and telegraphs, and a thermal efficiency solution that still today allows the building not to lose the heat it has stored during the cold seasons.

Today the building is home to the management offices of Poste Italiane for southern Italy and in the two rooms on the ground floor there are two large post offices that, together with the other 240 in Naples and the province, continue to offer their services to Neapolitan citizens. The buildings of Poste Italiane are often works of art, in their most diverse artistic and structural declinations they have represented over the years the transformation that our country has experienced between the end of the nineteenth century and the post-war period.

Even from the point of view of architectural culture they have contributed to delineate the outline of an unprecedented modernity: especially from the 30s, in the sign of the rationalist style. Without forgetting the important social role they have represented for all generations and in every era.

The beauty of the Palazzo in Piazza Matteotti in Naples has been exalted once again in a prestigious artistic volume “Le belle Poste. Palazzi storiche delle Poste italiane” published by Franco Maria Ricci on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of Poste Italiane.

The text is a collection of technical sheets, images and insights into the historic buildings accompanied by drafts and drawings made by excellent photographers such as Luciano Romano, Giovanni Ricci-Novara and Massimo Listri.
